Caring For Your Ink

5shades Tattoos

Tattoos aren’t cheap. At least, good tattoos aren’t cheap. They’re a piece of art that is to be cherished, admired. So it should come as no surprise that you need to care for them as such. Regardless of how amazing your tattoo artist is, your piece doesn’t stand a chance if you don’t take proper care of it. Here’s how…

When you leave the tattoo shop, it’s likely that you’ll be bandaged with a clear plastic wrap. It is essential that you allow this wrap to remain in place for approximately 4-6 hours. One of the most important factors in caring for your new tattoo is to always wash your hands before touching the area near the tattoo. Keep this in mind when attempting any of the next steps, and you’re well on your way to successful tattoo care.

Once you remove the plastic wrap, you’ll want to wash your tattoo. Now, we at Black Line Studio recommend Trisan Skin Cleanser for this process. Regardless of which product you opt to use, it is important that the product is a non-scented antibacterial soap or cleanser. Always make sure to pat dry, never wipe or rub, with a clean towel or allow to air dry for approximately a half an hour. After the area has dried completely, apply a thin layer of an aftercare product, such as Webber Vitamin E aftercare, a water-based non-scented product.

After the tattoo has been thoroughly cleaned and dried, reapply a plastic wrap (a fresh, clean piece) dressing to the area. The wrap helps to stop bacteria and other infections from entering your tattoo. You’ll want to repeat this process three times a day, for three days.

Once your first three days pass, you’ll be able to show off your ink a little more—leaving it exposed for the remainder of the healing process. While you no longer need to wash the area three times a day, it is vital that you do wash your ink at least once a day with the antibacterial wash.

Always avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, and baths until the tattoo has healed completely. Keep the tattoo hydrated but avoid excess moisture as it can draw out the color of your fresh ink. Ensure you keep your new body art out of direct sunlight until it has fully healed. Even after healing, it is important to apply sunscreen to your tattoo when venturing out into direct sunlight. This will help avoid fading from exposure. Try to keep your tattoo free of dust, sand, dirt, and pet hair for the first several days. Clean bed sheets, towels, and clothing are other factors that can help your healing process be successful.

While everyone heals at a different rate, you can expect your tattoo to be healed within approximately two weeks.
